Porsche 718 F1

Not many things were done this week. Sanded rear body and made shock absorbers.

The cylinders are made of 3/64" brass pipes, the rods are made of 0.6mm nickel-silver wire, and the springs are made of 0.4mm brass wires.

Still working on the rear body and some panel scribing. The seat is almost ready.
Carving out the body to fit grills.

エッチングパーツの自作キットを Micro-Mark から入手しました。まずはプラ版で型をつくります。

Okay, it's been more than a half year since the last update, but I haven't abandoned this one (yet).
Since the shape of the two large grills have been changed, the photo-etch parts in the kit can't be used.
So I'm going to make ones by myself.

I've got a Do-It-Yourself PE kit from Micro-Mark. First I made templates from styrene sheet.

Leave the kit for another three months, and magically the grills and the spokes for steering wheel are ready :)

ほかのモデルを作っていた間にも資料漁りをしてました。大きかったのは GPMA のメンバーが Goodwood 2005 で撮ってきた写真を CD にしたものが手に入ったことです。718 の写真が十数枚あってとても参考になりました。ありがたいことですが、修正したいところがいくつも見つかって、またいつまでたっても完成しない予感。以下の部分を変更中です。

• コクピット以降のボディが高すぎるようなので、思いっきり修正。
• ボディ前部の断面が角ばりすぎているみたいなので、これまた思いっきり修正。
• コクピットの前縁をもう少し前に移動。
• そのほか各所パネルラインの筋彫りの変更。

元のレジンと、ポリパテと、溶きパテと、適当なサフと、アルテコの瞬着パテですごい模様になってます。これだけやっておいて、実車に似てない可能性があるのが恐ろしいです。

ところで、最近 Jade Miniature が Porsche 718 F2 のキットを発売したみたいですが、Grand Prix Models のサイトの写真を見る限りでは、スターターのキットと全く同じです。プロバンスムラージュが倒産した際に原型が Jade Miniature に買い取られたんですかねえ。

Finally I'm back on this kit. The last time I was primarily working on this model was September 2004. It's been a year and half since then.

I've been collecting references while I was working on other models. The biggest one was the CD that is created by one of GPMA members. The CD has pictures from Goodwood 2005 and it contains several pictures of 718. It was very helpful, and I found lots of stuff I need to fix on the body. Currently I'm working the followings.

• Filing the body behind the cockpit to reduce the height.
• Modifying the front half of the body to round off the shoulder.
• Enlarging the cockpit area toward the front.
• Revising panel lines.

The body is now very colorful because of resin, primer and combination of various kind of putties. It's kind of sad to realize that it's possible the model doesn't look like the actual car after these works :(

BTW Jade Miniature recently released the kit of Porsche 718 F2. As far as I checked the picture of kit at Grand Prix Models, it's exactly same as one from Starter. I wonder if Jade Miniature bought the master from Provence Moulage when they went out of business.

このごろ天気がよくなってきたせいか、花粉症がひどくなってきました。しばらく薬漬けの日々が続きそうです。

I didn't make much progress this week. Re-scribed the panels on the nose and and engine hood, and modified the area around the head restraint. The roll bar will be placed in the recesses on both sides of head restraint.

My pollen allergy is getting worse as we're having more sunny days here in Seattle.

先週からの変更点は、

• フロントパネルの給油口(?)の筋彫り追加
• コクピット周りのウィンドウを取り付けるための出っ張り追加
• ヘッドレスト部をさらに工作

です。

コクピット周りの出っ張りは、最初アルテコの瞬間接着パテを使って作ろうとしました。が、薄くすると簡単に割れてしまうので、エポキシパテで作り直しました。キットには１ｍｍ径の銅線？が入ってましたが、ちょっと太すぎるようなので、0.032 インチ（0.8mm）の真鍮線を使うことにします。

今週末はシカゴでフェラーリのミーティングおよびモデルカーコンテストです。せっかくシアトルから行くんだから、いいイベントになるといいなあ。

Can you tell the difference from the last week?

The followings have been changed since the last week.

• Added the fuel lid (?) on the front panel
• Added the rim around the cockpit where windshield will be attached.
• Further modification around the head restraint.

At first I tried to make the rim around the cockpit by Alteco's super glue putty. But it chips very easily when it's thinned, so I used epoxy putty instead. The kit includes 1mm copper (?) wire for the roll bar. But it seems too thick, so I'm going to use 0.032 inch (0.8mm) brass wire.

I'll be attending the Ferrari owners meeting and model car contest in Chicago. I hope it'll be a good show.
